The Institute and Museum of the History of Science preserves the original manuscript archives of the Reale Museo di Fisica e Storia Naturale di Firenze (Florence Royal Museum of Physics and Natural History). The Royal Museum was founded by the initiatives of Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo and was opened to the public in 1775. The documentation covers a span of almost a century (1780 - 1872) and is the principle source for reconstructing the history of the institution in all of its aspects including its relations with the main European science centers. The cataloguing of the main series (Affari, Copialettere, Mandati, Spese, Spese e madati, Commercio di produzioni naturali) was completed in 1998. Thanks to the financial support of the Regione Toscana, the minor series has recently been catalogued and the whole collection is now available to scholars. The collection can be researched via the library's online catalogue by going to OPAC's home page and clicking on "ARMU Minor series" to access a list in brief format. |
