Restoration of Coronelli's celestial globe

Area:
Museum
Start:
1 March 2009
Description:
With the occasion of the exhibition "Galileo: Images of the universe from antiquity to the telescope" one of the four large globes by Vincenzo Coronelli has recently been restored. This celestial globe has a diameter greater than one meter and sits on a wooden base. Overtime it had been reduced to a poor condition making it very difficult to read. It has been completely cleaned, consolidated and restored by Sergio and Maurizio Boni and by Luca and Andrea Dori under the supervision of Mara Miniati. The celestial globe dates back to the end of the 17th century. Some of the extraordinary characteristics were revealed during the restoration.
Innumerable writings that had been illegible until now were recovered that refer back to observations and discoveries made by various scientists including Kepler, Hevelius, Ciampini. Elegantly incised watercolored figures were restored back to their original beauty and intensity. Any gaps were integrated to the aesthetical beauty of the instrument. The wooden base was restored by Andrea Rabbi.
The restoration work was also started on the terrestrial globe which was in worse condition than the celestial globe. This difficult restoration process should be complete by the end of this coming autumn.
