August and September of 2009 saw the closings of three major exhibitions that had been conceived by the Institute and Museum of the History of Science and actualized thanks to the cooperative efforts between important Italian and foreign institutes. All three exhibitions were considered successes and praised by both the public and critics. "Galileo, the Medici & the Age of Astronomy", hosted by the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia from April 4th to September 7th, was visited by approximately 120,000 people and grabbed the attention of various television stations and newspapers (in particular, the New York Times published a series of articles about the exhibition). In Florence more than 113,000 people visited the exhibition "Galileo: Images of the Universe from Antiquity to the Telescope", hosted in Palazzo Strozzi from March 13th to August 30th. The exhibition, much appreciated by the public, also excited the interest of the scientific community and kindled a strong debate in the media. On August 30th the travelling exhibition "La mente di Leonardo" ("The Mind of Leonardo"), that had been running at the Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Venezia in Rome since May 1st, ended. Rome was the last stop for this successful exhibition on Leonardo da Vinci, that also toured Florence, Tokyo, Debrecen and San Jose (California). |
