Window pane
Glass 51 x 45,5 cm Pompeii, House of Julius Polibius (IX, 13, 1.3) SAP, inv. 22298 I century A.D.
Cylindrical box with straight rim designed to hold a lid, now lost. The bottom is flat. Containers realized in this refined technique are very rare in the Vesuvian area. An analogous example, also from Pompeii, is conserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (inv. 109634). This type of container was general used to hold cosmetics or unguents. Probably the workshops that produced this gold-striped glass were centered in Aquilea.
