I century A.D.

Bolos of Mendes and Mary the Jew, two alchemists who lived near Alexandria in Egypt around the I century A.D., were the first to declaredly appreciate the use of chemistry instruments made of glass. The chemical neutrality of glass was immediately recognised as a crucially important property. Alembics, retorts and receptacles made of this material made it possible to carry out chemical reactions without releasing particles or being corroded by reagents.
