Marble basin for fountain use

Alabastrine plaster cast, c. 1930
Rome, Museo della Civiltą Romana, inv. M.C.R. 3727

This fountain has the form of a rhyton. This is a replica of the original kept in the Museo dei Conservatori in Rome. For its exceptional size and fine modeling, this sculpture, signed by the Athenian Pontios, is one of the masterpieces of the neo-Attic workshops active in the Augustan Age.
