Red-figure krater
Clay, c. 380 B.C. Campania Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. K 523
The scene on the krater portrays Ulysses who, having survived a shipwreck, reaches the island of Scheria, today's Corfu, where he is welcomed by Alcinous, king of the Phaeaces. Homer describes the royal palace of Alcinous surrounded by a marvelous park with an orchard, an olive grove, a vineyard and vegetable gardens, sprinkled by the crystal-clear waters of two springs.
