Black-figure Attic amphora
Terracotta, 550-540 B.C. Vulci Vatican City, Musei Vaticani, inv. 16589
Eos, the personification of dawn, is weeping in a garden over the head of her son Memnon, slain by Achilles in the Trojan War. This is one of the rare examples of Greek vase painting in which landscape elements are used; among them can be recognized a plane tree and a conifer.
