Centaur

White marble, 1st cent. A.D.
Oplontis excavations
Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, inv. 70068

The body of the centaur, in a prancing pose, is traversed by a narrow channel through which water flows, to gush out of the wild boar's mouth. This sculpture formed part of the fountain group that included the other three centaurs found in the Villa of Poppaea.
