Satyr and Hermaphrodite
White marble, 1st cent. A.D. Oplontis excavations Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, inv. 72800
This group, representing a hermaphrodite accosted by a satyr, is a copy of a Hellenistic original reproduced in various forms in Roman times. It stood along the pool but, like several other statues, was undergoing restoration at the time of the eruption in 79 A.D., as shown by the fact that some detached parts were found elsewhere.
