Satyr carrying a wineskin on his back

White marble, pavonazzo marble base, 1st cent. A.D.
Herculaneum, House of the Stags
Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, inv. 75797

Statuettes of similar subject were very popular as garden ornaments, and similar examples have been found in Pompeii as well. From the wineskin on the satyr's back gushed water, conveyed by a fountain pipe running up his back.
