Herma portraying Menander
White marble, early 1st cent. A.D. Pompeii, House of the Gilded Cupids Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, inv. 20526
Due to facial features and hair style, this sculpture has been identified as a portrait of the Greek playwright Menander. Originally standing on a pillar, it confirms the householder's love for theatre, as can be deduced from other elements of the decoration as well as the scenic design of the garden.
