Mask of Maenad

White marble, 1st cent. A.D.
Pompeii, House of the Gilded Cupids
Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, inv. 3014

This oscillum represents a Maenad, identified by her attributes and by the frenzied attitude typical of the women who followed the cult of Dionysus. Found in the garden of the house, it was part of the decoration adorning the peristyle, along with the other oscilla displayed here, such as the masks of Silenus and Paniscus.
