Oscillum with centaur
White marble, first half of 1st cent. A.D. Pompeii, House of the Gilded Cupids Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, inv. 55403
On the front appears a rearing centaur, in the act of hurling a stone; on the opposite side is the same centaur viewed from the back, his hands bound behind him. These images represent the two stages, attack and defeat, of one of the numerous myths dealing with Hercules and the centaurs.
