Priapus

Luna marble, 1st cent. A.D.
Pompeii, House of the Vettii
Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, inv. 87265

The water pipe, which traversed the enormous phallus, confirms that the statue was used as a fountain, placed in the garden. The House of the Vettii boasts another exceptional image of Priapus, painted beside the main entrance, confirming the owners' special consideration for the cult of this benevolent god.
