The Muse Erato

White marble, 1st cent. A.D.
Pompeii, House of D. Octavius Quartio
Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, inv. 2909

Although the statuette has lost its lyre, it can be identified as Erato, the muse of convivial song and love poetry. It originally stood on one of the six bases along the southern side of the canal, which probably held statues of muses, of which only this and one other have been found.
