Allegory of a river

White marble, 1st cent. A.D.
Pompeii, House of D. Octavius Quartio
Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, inv. 2935

The flowing gown spreading out at the base of the figure is an allegory of fluvial waters. The presence in this house of elements linked to the cult of Isis, as well as a sphinx and other Pharaonic statuettes in glazed terracotta, tend to identify the river goddess with the Nile.
