Cupid with mask

White marble, first half of 1st cent. A.D.
Pompeii, House of D. Octavius Quartio
Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, inv. 20513

The left arm holds a comic mask, from the mouth of which gushed water. The sculpture stood at the top of a cascade, from which water flowed beside the longitudinal euripus, in the nymphaeum below the small temple of Diana.
