The young Dionysus

White marble, first half of 1st cent. A.D.
Pompeii, House of D. Octavius Quartio
Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, inv. 20382

This sculpture, interpreted as a young, beardless Dionysus, has facial features more similar to those of Heracles, whose myth appears to have inspired many of the decorative elements in this house.
