Corbel with female mask
White marble, first half of 1st cent. A.D. Pompeii, House of D. Octavius Quartio Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, inv. 2928
The mask originally served to close air intakes or niches, as is often seen in paintings. In the garden of the house the sculpture, deprived of its original function and placed between other small decorative marbles, stood before the statuette of the sphinx.
