Earthenware pot for flowers
Terracotta, 1st cent. A.D. Pompeii, House of the Ship Europa Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, inv. 14578
This pot, found in the orchard of the House of the Ship Europa, was probably used to reproduce plant species before transplanting them into the soil. The use of ollae perforatae, which had holes for drainage, is mentioned by both Pliny the Elder and Cato, who recommended them for transporting plants and for layering.
