Anton Francesco Gori
A man of letters and antiquary, Gori was one of the founders of the Societą Colombaria Fiorentina (now the Tuscan Academy of Science and Letters, "La Colombaria"), established in 1735 to foster "not only Tuscan Poetry and Eloquence, or one faculty only; but almost all the most distinguished and useful parts of human knowledge: in a word, it is what the Greeks called Encyclopedia" (A. F. Gori, "Prefazione," Memorie di varia erudizione della Societą Colombaria Fiorentina, Florence, 1747, vol. I, pp. XI-XII). In 1737, when Galileo's remains (1564-1642) were moved to the monumental tomb in Santa Croce, he detached the middle finger of the right hand.
