An intellectual from Lucca with strong liberal tendencies, he was one of the founders of the bank known as the "Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca" (1835), where he held the position of Secretary General until 1849. For the capacity he showed in occupying this position, he was appointed by Duke Charles Ludwig of Bourbon (1799-1883) to reorganise the system of the local hospitals. Appointed director general of the Lucca Hospitals and Hospices in 1841, he was one of the promoters of instituting the first kindergardens and seaside hostels. State Councillor in 1852, he was elected Senator of the Kingdom in 1880.
