A botanist from Pisa, Attilio Tassi was director of the Lucca Botanical Gardens from 1850 to 1860, having succeeded Benedetto Puccinelli (1808-1850). He later became Director of the Siena Botanical Gardens, Professor of Botany and Rector of the University of Siena. He demonstrated his strong civil commitment as a patriot in the Italian Risorgimento.
