Antico Spedale del Bigallo [Ancient Hospital of Bigallo]

Founded in the early 13th century, it served the purpose, like other similar hospitals, of assisting the poor and pilgrims. Its refectory, with a decorated coffered ceiling, still conserves its monumental fireplace with chimney resting on slender columns, and its ancient stone sink.

As regards technical-scientific aspects, the hydraulic system used to supply water is particularly interesting. The water was conveyed from an ancient spring through an intricate system of channels, still visible today, and was utilised in the kitchens, the courtyard and for irrigating the vegetable garden. There was also an ingenious system of collecting rainwater: it flowed from the gutters into urns buried in the paving of the courtyard and at the outer corners of the building.

The Hospital, which later became a monastery, is today a modern tourist facility (Ostello del Bigallo) in monastic style.
