Port of Rio Marina
The origin of the port of Rio Marina is closely tied to the large iron mines located in the surroundings. In the 19th century, along the stretch of coast adjoining the port, several berths connected to the mines by means of cableways and railways were created to embark the iron. With the progressive abandonment of mining activities, the remaining constructions (a loading pier and the facilities in the port area behind it, and various buildings between Rio Marina and Cavo) have become fascinating examples of industrial archaeology which document a crucial historical moment for the island, while the picturesque port has acquired a tourism connotation.
