Michael usually sailed in galleys, but most commerce was actually conducted in square-rigged sailing ships of various sizes. The ship shown here represents a melding of Mediterranean and Atlantic technologies. As the sailing ship evolved in the 15th century, it became easier to maneuver, cheaper to operate, and cheaper to defend. The commercial galleys, with their expensive crews, were doomed.
