Most of the collection begun by Cosimo I de' Medici (1519-1574) in the sixteenth century was stored in the many closets of the Guardaroba [Wardrobe], a room in the Palazzo Vecchio now called the Map Room. After the founding of the Uffizi Gallery in 1583, the works of art and meraviglie [curiosities] were installed in the complex built by Vasari. However, the Wardrobe remained the repository for a number of works of art and scientific objects.
