Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446) and begun in 1440, the Pitti Palace was enlarged in 1560 by Cosimo I de' Medici (1519-1574). After the addition of other wings, it became, under the rule of the Lorraines, the impressive building that can be admired today. In the seventeenth century, it housed the Accademia del Cimento. The sprawling complex covers an area of 32,000 square meters and is 205 meters long. It is now home to the Galleria Palatina, the Modern Art Gallery, the Museum of Silver, the Coach Museum, and the Costume Gallery. Behind the Palace is the large, splendid Boboli Garden.
