        .................................

Telescope consisting of a wooden tube of square section (60 mm on a side), containing a cardboard tube for the compound eyepiece. All the lenses are missing. The instrument is traditionally attributed to Evangelista Torricelli. It is first mentioned in the 1776 inventory of the Museo di Fisica e Storia Naturale of Florence, which refers to an objective lens broken in two, but not to Torricelli as the maker. In any event, the characteristics are typical of eighteenth-century telescopes. It is possible, however that the tube was made to accommodate a lens made by Torricelli. Not even the compound-eyepiece tube can be ascribed to Torricelli: it is of a construction used from the 1660s to the late eighteenth century.
