Large lodestone trimmed into a sphere, with latitudinal and longitudinal grooves dividing the sphere into equal areas. The lodestone is armed (capped) by two iron hemispheres encased by sheets of beaten copper and terminating at the top in large pole pieces. The caps are held together at the base by a thick copper strap and at the top by a brass tie-bar through the poles. The wrought iron keeper is suspended from a lever with a heavy lead counterweight. This magnetic globe is the largest of its kind known to exist. Provenance: Lorraine collections.
