This terracotta model, commissioned by Giuseppe Galletti, describes a fetus in face presentation and in dorso-posterior position. The applications of forceps are more difficult, longer, and more dangerous in face presentations than in vertex presentations. The chin must always be brought under the pubis, even when it is already in the sacral cavity, and the forceps are used only in cases of absolute necessity. This is because the blades are poorly fitted to the cheek and jaw, and because the pressure of the instrument on the neck can generate lethal lesions.
