This obstetrical wax model shows the start of puerperium. The uterus has been placed outside the body and folded forward to illustrate its large muscular mass and flattened shape. In direct contact with the abdominal wall, the uterus extends up to the umbilicus. The convergence of the two walls, 3-4 centimeters thick, turns the uterine cavity into a narrow slit filled with a small quantity of blood.
The model was commissioned by Felice Fontana, who was working on the installation of the Museo di Fisica e Storia Naturale of Florence, from the sculptor Giuseppe Ferrini and his assistant Clemente Susini.
