Sheet of specular stone
Mica 29,2 x 10,5 Unknown provenance (perhaps vesuvian area) SANC, inv. s.n. I century A.D.
With the term “specular stone”, the Romans meant a group of minerals that could be cut into thin and transparent sheets. The composition of these minerals (probably micas) was similar to that of glass. Roman craftsmen used specular stone to seal windows and, in agriculture, greenhouses.
