Tabernacle of the Executed, Certaldo.
Benozzo’s extended stay in San Gimignano in the 1460s gave him the opportunity to make himself known in the area and establish new relationships with other clients. Indeed, between 1464 and 1465, the Vicar and the Podesta commissioned him to fresco the Tabernacle of the Executed in Certaldo, a town which had become the site where sentences were passed for the people of Valdelsa and Valdera. This chapel was situated outside the town wall, near the bridge over the River Agliena. It was here that those condemned to death were accompanied by members of the Brotherhood of Justice, who took care of them during the final hours, comforting them with prayer and encouraging them to repent.
In order to preserve it, this tabernacle has now been dismantled and placed in the Vicarial Palace.
