Andrea Pisano
Architect and sculptor born in Pontedera, near Pisa, also known as Andrea da Pontedera. Probably trained in a goldsmith's shop, he worked on the South Door of the Battistero in Florence from 1330 to 1336. At Giotto's death in 1337, appointed master-builder of the Opera del Duomo in Florence. Continued the construction of the Campanile, but was unable to complete it, having fallen from favor after the expulsion of the Duke of Athens from Florence in 1342. Moved to Pisa, where he started a prosperous sculpture workshop. In 1347, was appointed master-builder of the Duomo of Orvieto, a position inherited by his son Nino.
