Scipione Chiaramonti
Son of Chiaramonte Chiaramonti, he was born in Cesena on June 21, 1565 and studied at the University of Ferrara, staying at the home of Cardinal Alessandro d’Este. After the latter’s death he moved on to the circle of Cardinal Curzio Sangiorgi, then taught mathematics for some time at the University of Perugia, and lastly was appointed in 1627 to a lectureship in philosophy at the University of Pisa, which post he held until 1636. He afterwards retired to Cesena, where he died on October 3, 1652. He polemicized with the three greatest astronomers of his time, Tycho Brahe, Kepler and Galileo, and it is owing to this, and not to the value of his works, that he is remembered.
