The "Giuseppe Moruzzi" Department of Physiology and Biochemistry was created in 1986 by merging the Physiology Institute of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery with the Biochemistry and Biophysics Section of the Biochemistry and Genetics Institute in the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Natural Science. In 1988 the Histology and Embryology Institute of the Faculty of Science also joined the Department. The Department possesses various experimental and educational instruments for Physiology. The collection, dating from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century, includes acoustical and optical apparatus, instruments for the analysis of blood, electrical instrumentation, and educational anatomical models, both human and animal. Two chests of drawers contain educational photographic plates and glass slides with preparations for microscopic examination.
