Thin strip of magnetized steel, typically in the shape of a very elongated rhombus. The magnetic needle is the basic component of the compass. Suspended from its center of gravity and rotating freely, it settles in the direction of the Earth's magnetic field. In other words, one of its tips points toward the magnetic north pole.
