Codex Leicester, 22v. - Page with a series of forty-two topics ("39 cases"), as subjects to be studied and discussed: from hydraulic engineering to life in the rivers and seas. A curious expedient is the idea of cleaning riverbeds by the trampling feet of "large animals" (however, cf. Alberti, "De architettura"). In particular Leonardo describes a strategic use of the watercourses in a valley to frighten the enemy. One observation refers to a whirlwind over a sandbar in the Arno, in the form of a very high bell tower, with the top spreading out like the branches of a great pine tree.
